Cincinnati's Painted History

Cincinnati's Painted History

Can you envision Cincinnati’s landscape 100 years ago – or maybe 200 years ago? Where most of the beloved buildings downtown now stand was once an uncharted and undeveloped natural landscape, littered with forests. Cincinnatians and travelers who lived in the past had a unique view of our city’s sights and sounds that was much different than the bustling cityscape we know today. “Treasures of the Past: Cincinnati’s Historic Art 1800-1930” exhibit at the Cincinnati Museum Center at Union Terminal, on display through August 5, give the public that perspective. “Treasures of the Past” features both rarely and never before seen paintings, sculptures, furniture, and a variety of other works of art, mostly from the Cincinnati Museum...

ArtWorks Partners the Community and Artists with the Celebration of Cincinnati’s Flying Pigs The Big Pig Gig is coming back to Cincinnati this summer to once again fill the streets with lots of silent "oinks" and change our perception of the pink piglet. In honor of the World Choral Games, the Olympics of Choirs taking place during the month of July, ArtWorks is calling one and all to help make the Big Pig Gig another grand celebration. ArtWorks, a Cincinnati based nonprofit arts organization since 1996, connects artists of all ages with opportunities in the arts through apprenticeships, community partnerships, and public art. Fashion and Art: A Love Affair

Fashion and Art: A Love Affair

There are so many incredible places, people and things in this world that can inspire us. In the same way we all have different tastes in fashion; we also have different tastes in art. Sometimes we feel unsure of what our personal style really is. As I briefly mentioned in earlier posts, your wardrobe can say a lot about you. Look inside your closet and make note of the trends. What colors do you see most? What textures? What patterns? Your fashion sense can help you discover your art sense. Fashion inspires art & art inspires fashion! So if you love that sequin dress or feel absolutely gorgeous in that floral blouse, choose artwork that makes you feel just as fabulous. See more at ADC's Blog.

The Art of Entertaining

10/05/11

The Art of Entertaining

On September 15, ADC unveiled Michele Nieter, of Arbor Living Interior’s, Design Star Cincinnati showroom. And, wow, what a success! The crowd was beyond impressed. Throughout the evening I continued to hear people say they want to lift Michele’s room right out of the gallery, and plop it down into their own home! (…and, yes, I confess I was one of these people!) Even the smallest details of this room, dedicated to “The Art of Entertaining,” were well thought out including the colors, textures, and even the technology! TEAL WITH ZEAL Michele’s use of color in this room is well balanced and gives the room a sophisticated energy. By using such bright teal with a more subdued and neutral grey, the color accents pop! The pillows, vases,...

Tale As Old As Time

Tale As Old As Time

If you are looking for a night of family friendly entertainment, take your kids to see the musical-stage performance of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast playing at the Aronoff Center through Sunday, October 9. I attended Cincinnati’s opening night performance.  It’s a  “tale as old as time,” and younger audiences will be delighted to see Belle, Gaston, Lumier, Cogsworth, Mrs. Potts, and all their other favorites come to life right in front of their eyes.  Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is the classic story of Belle, a young woman in a provincial town, and the Beast, who is really a young prince trapped in a spell placed by an enchantress. If the Beast can learn to love and be loved, the curse will end and he will be transformed to...

A Different Kind of Beauty, Pt. 1

As you all know my blog is all about beautiful art and beautiful spaces. This week I’ll be talking about and showing you a different kind of beauty. I am honored to be part of an incredible, impactful and meaningful photo exhibit coming to Cincinnati  called The SCAR Project. On September 29 through October 2, ADC will open its gallery doors to everyone in our city, providing them with the opportunity to experience something truly special and memorable. Yes, it’s shocking at first but I promise you will never forget these powerful images. http://thescarprojectcincy.blogspot.com/ THE STORY BEHIND THE SCAR The SCAR Project is an international, Pulitzer nominated exhibit of a series of portraits of young breast cancer survivors shot by fashion...

Disco "I Do's"

Last month we had one of the most fabulously unique events the ADC art gallery has ever seen! It was sparkly and extravagant, and above all—groovy. Recent newlyweds, both dance lovers, felt that they should have a celebration with friends and family that represented their fun and outgoing personalities. This is how they decided on their oh-so-incredible, disco dance party!DIGGIN’ THE DETAILSI have had the pleasure of working with Cecelia Rose, Event Producer at Eventurous, several times. She always impresses me with her ideas and never fails to deliver…“The couple chose (ADC) because they loved the modern, urban vibe” Cecelia said. The movable walls of the gallery were ideal for creating the perfect dance floor and all the colors in the artwork added...

A Healing Art

A Healing Art

Art can influence human emotion, mindset, and mood. There are times when people desperately need courage, hope, or happiness and art has the power to make a positive impact! Art can de-stress and soothe, lift moods, and give encouragement. Where is this power put to better use than in a healthcare facility, impacting patients, their families, and staff alike?FIRST IMPRESSIONSLet’s face it, unless you’re visiting mommy and newborn, generally…no one likes the hospital. Whether you’re there for your own health, or a friends—many feel uncomfortable in the sadness, sterile, and cold of a hospital. As new hospitals go up, and current hospitals renovate, both design and fine art are changing a hospital’s first impression. The goal is to take focus away from...

The Allure of White

The Allure of White

What is it about white that we love so much? From our smiles to our diamonds—there is something utterly alluring about the clean and freshness of pure.bright.white. The most fantastic thing about a completely white space is that it’s simply a blank canvas for us to add splashes of our own expression! STRIKING ACCORD When there are a lot of different or vibrant colors trying to work together in a single space, white is the perfect way to balance and ground the design. White works as a visual palate cleanser when artwork is busy. Any piece that can seem overwhelming in composition or color is easily offset by the purity of a white foundation. Why are the walls of galleries and museums white? This is the best way to create a visual background and foreground. White spaces are...

Lively, playful hues are perfect for this season because they force us to have a little fun! Bold teals and vibrant yellows wake up a space and give it vitality. Dizzy's Club-New York City

When you're in New York City and you want to see live Jazz, Dizzy's Club which is part of Jazz at Lincoln Center is your destination. My first visit to Dizzy's was with my father and his wife over Memorial Day weekend.John Williamson, Sherry Lynn Williamson, and Paul Williamson at Dizzy's Jazz Club in NYC.A night of smooth jazz was performed by the legendary Ernestine Anderson and Houston Person with Lafayette Harris, Lonnie Plaxico, and Willie Jones, III. The set was performed against a window wall backdrop overlooking the New York City skyline. We were transported back to the jazz age as Ernestine got carried away with her own rendition of "That Rainy Day is Here," as the crowd erupted with applause for the 88-year old Ernestine. Her voice was smooth and easy, despite...

Hairspray at the LaComedia Dinner Theatre

Hairspray at the LaComedia Dinner Theatre

Now’s your chance to see the regional theatre premiere of Hairspray at the LaComedia Dinner Theatre in Springboro, Ohio. The show runs through June 26. I saw the hit Broadway musical there last weekend, and as LaComedia touts, it was truly a “taste of Broadway.” The show features 28 talented cast members drawn from across the country. Some of the true standouts were the charming Edward Miskie (check out his website: www.edwardmiskie.com), the brashy Brian Padgett, and the stunning Karie-Lee Sutherland. Karie-Lee is a Cincinnati native who is currently a student at CCM and teaches in their prep department.Ray Zupp (Link), Nicole Nesbitt (Tracy), Brian Padgett (Edna), and John Williamson Hairspray is based on the film by the same title written by John Waters....

Cincinnati Dinner Train

Cincinnati Dinner Train

If you haven’t taken the Cincinnati Dinner Train, you simply must—it’s a great evening out that takes you back in time. Last weekend my colleague Rita Byrd and I embarked on the three-hour ride that began in Oakley and traveled about ten miles to downtown Cincinnati and back. The trip included drinks, dinner, historic sites, and great conversation. Co-owner Brian Collins of the Cincinnati Railway Company was our conductor of the evening. Brian pointed out some of the local and historic sites along the way, including Undercliff Railway Yard, Lunken Airport, Pioneer Cemetery (dating back to 1790 and holding at least three Revolutionary War veterans), and the Old Torrence Railway Station. One of the highlights of the Torrence Street Station is the historical Karl Bitter...

Arts

You’ve found it! The virtual spot where you can learn more about many of the hottest happenings in the arts world in the Greater Cincinnati area. It was exciting to be one the first to see world premiere new plays from across the globe at The YES (Year End Series) Festival at Northern Kentucky University. Adapting a model from Louisville’s Humana Festival of New American Plays, the NKU theatre department reviewed over 300 scripts from the United States, Canada, and Europe and selected three to produce as part of this year’s festival. On Friday, I attended opening night of the world premiere of Monstrous Beauty, written by Kara Jennings and directed by Mike King, NKU faculty member. The drama explores the life of Leni Reifenshthal (played brilliantly by Cincinnati...
