JUST DO IT

JUST DO IT

It was 1988. A couple of ad agency execs were sitting in a meeting with some Nike execs and one (reportedly) told Nike: “You guys just do it right.” Hmm...nice ring to that. And Nike’s incredibly famous and successful slogan was born. Twenty-four years later, Nike’s simple three word mantra “JUST DO IT” is going strong. It has gone through many different target groups and fashion changes. But...the basic fact, the basic push, is the same. It, actually, is a timeless thought.

Yes, you know what point I am going to eventually make. Every day we make choices. Now that’s a good thing. We all want freedom of choice. The downside is that we have a choice. The upside is that we have a choice. Stay with me. Feel empowered! Make a good, healthy choice today. And then make one tomorrow and the next day. Do not feel that you have to change your whole life in one day. Make one positive change today, just one. They add up. Here’s an example:

Even if you drink only one soda a day, over time those liquid calories are impacting. A 12-ounce can of regular cola contains 150 calories. If you drink that with lunch today, in one year, you will have consumed up to 55,000 EMPTY calories - about 15 pounds! Make water, unsweetened iced tea, seltzer, or coffee your choice of beverage.

Here’s another idea - take one 10 minute walk today. I know it seems small. Most of us do not take the initial first step because we feel overwhelmed. We know we can’t commit to an hour workout three days a week. But really, we ALL have 10 minutes to take a walk. Include the family. Get them off of the sofa and away from the TV, computer, cell phone, PS2. THEY will feel better, too. It’s amazing what a short walk will do for your head, as well as your body.

Small, consistent change is the key. Please, for me, just do it.
